Common Health Concerns in French Bulldogs

French Bulldogs are an adorable and lovable breed, but they do come with some unique health challenges. In 2018, the UK Royal Veterinary College studied 2,228 French Bulldogs and found that 72.4% had at least one notable health issue. The most common included skin conditions (17.9%), ear infections (14%), diarrhea (7.5%), and conjunctivitis (3.2%).
As a Canadian French Bulldog breeder, I see firsthand how important it is for owners—both new and experienced—to be informed about potential health concerns. My goal is to help you be as knowledgeable and prepared as you are excited about bringing a Frenchie into your home!
Below is a breakdown of some of the most common health issues French Bulldogs may experience.
1. Ear Infections
French Bulldogs are prone to ear infections due to their narrow ear canals, which make them more susceptible to wax buildup and swelling. Allergies can worsen this condition, leading to excess tissue growth that further narrows the ear canal, increasing the risk of infection. If left untreated, an infection could cause eardrum rupture and severe discomfort.
Signs to Watch For:
✔ Excessive ear scratching or head shaking.
✔ Bad odour from the ears.
✔ Redness, swelling, or discharge.
2. Digestive Issues & Diarrhea
French Bulldogs have sensitive stomachs, making them prone to diarrhea and digestive upsets. Their diet needs to be monitored closely to prevent reactions to food allergies, parasites, viruses, or bacterial infections.
Warning Signs:
✔ Runny, tarry, or foul-smelling stool.
✔ Vomiting or lack of appetite.
✔ Weight loss or fever.
If your Frenchie has persistent diarrhea, it's important to see a vet to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
3. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
French Bulldogs’ brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure puts them at higher risk for conjunctivitis, an eye condition caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies.
Symptoms Include:
✔ Red or pink irritation around the eyes.
✔ Excessive blinking or squinting.
✔ Mucus, pus, or watery discharge.
If you notice any of these signs, consult your vet for treatment.
4. Cherry Eye
Cherry Eye occurs when the third eyelid gland prolapses, creating a red, swollen mass in the inner corner of the eye. Some cases are mild and can be manually adjusted, while others require surgical correction.
5. Skin Issues & Dermatitis
Those signature Frenchie face wrinkles may be adorable, but they require regular cleaning to prevent dermatitis and skin infections. These issues can also develop in other areas with folds, such as the neck, armpits, and groin.
Common Signs:
✔ Itching, biting, or scratching.
✔ Redness and sores.
✔ Odour or discharge from skin folds.
Keeping these areas clean and dry can help prevent infections and discomfort.
6. Breathing & Respiratory Problems
Due to their short noses and flat faces, French Bulldogs are at risk for breathing difficulties and upper respiratory infections. Most Frenchies will experience a respiratory issue at some point, especially if they come into contact with other dogs.
Symptoms Include:
✔ Nasal congestion and snoring.
✔ Frequent coughing or wheezing.
✔ Fatigue or overheating in warm weather .
French Bulldogs are also prone to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which can cause:
⚠ Shortness of breath
⚠ Difficulty sleeping
⚠ Heat intolerance
This condition tends to worsen in hot weather or during exercise, so it’s crucial to keep your Frenchie cool and avoid overexertion.
7. Mobility Issues
French Bulldogs are prone to various joint and spinal conditions, some of which are genetic, while others stem from injuries.
Common Mobility Conditions:
✔ Hip Dysplasia & Luxating Patella – Can lead to arthritis or difficulty walking.
✔ Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) – A serious spinal condition that can cause paralysis. If your Frenchie suddenly loses the ability to walk, seek immediate veterinary care.

Final Thoughts
By now, you probably realize that French Bulldogs come with some serious health considerations. That doesn’t mean your Frenchie will experience all (or any) of these issues, but it’s important to be aware and prepared for the potential costs.
Key Takeaways:
✔ Research the breed thoroughly before committing.
✔ Have an emergency vet fund or pet insurance to cover unexpected medical expenses.
✔ Work with a reputable breeder (like us! 😉) who provides a one-year health guarantee and ensures health-tested parents.
